Frequently Asked Questions

What is BSEF?

Budhanilkantha School Endowment Fund Inc. (BSEF) is a non-profit entity that is established with the sole purpose of supporting, in perpetuity, the operating and infrastructure needs of our alma mater - Budhanilkantha School in Kathmandu, Nepal. Our goal is to ensure that the school continues to be the Center of Excellence in educating Nepali children from all parts of the country. BSEF is registered in the state of Maryland, US and has 501(c)(3) non-profit status.

Why is BSEF separate from SEBS?

Because BSEF is solely focused on providing a sustainable and long-term financial assistance to Budhanilkantha School, while SEBS does many great things for alumni and the school. A dedicated fund and organizational infrastructure to sustain the fund is the key commitment of BSEF.

What is the relationship between BSEF and BNKS?

BSEF and BNKS are in regular communication to help streamline the relationship and working procedure. At this time, the tentative arrangement is for BNKS to send funding requests to BSEF based on the current needs of the school. The BSEF board of directors will then decide which initiative to fund based on the availability of funds and the establishment of an accountability mechanism to ensure that the implementation of the approved project is satisfactory.

If I donate to BSEF, where does the money go?

Your donation will be invested in the Endowment Fund that is a long-term financial vehicle under the guidance of BSEF Financial and Investment Committee. Only the portion of the interest earned from the Endowment Fund will used to fund projects or initiatives in BNKS. Other portion of the interest earned will be re-invested in the Endowment Fund to ensure that the fund is solvent and sustained.

Are my donations tax-deductible?

BSEF has already obtained IRS 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. Your contributions to BSEF are tax-deductible.

How does BSEF make investment decisions?

The Finance and Investment Committee of BSEF sets the goals and guidelines for investment of all the funds collected by BSEF. The members of the committee are comprised of professionals from within and outside the BNKS network who are familiar and knowledgeable about investment, accounting and other financial matters.
